If global climate trends continue as they have been, the Florida Gulf coast might start looking a little more like S. Florida coast. Popping up in St. Joseph Bay salt marshes are little black mangroves. Black mangroves are more resistant to the colder temperatures than other mangroves, though they grow much smaller than in South Florida. If it gets warmer, however, they may start growing taller and more numerous, leading to shorter marsh plants being shaded out. Ed Proffitt of Florida Atlantic University visited Randall Hughes of the FSU Coastal & Marine Lab to start looking at how that would play out.
