If you've been following along with the World Flowers Collection, welcome back! In Episode 46, we're heading to the tropical islands of Seychelles to draw one of their most treasured symbols—the Comet Orchid. It's also known as the Tropicbird Orchid, and you'll immediately see why once we start sketching. This piece has a soft, stylized feel to it, focused on capturing that elegant, bird-like shape.
Here's what we'll work on in this tutorial:
Sketching the unique "bird in flight" form that makes this orchid so recognizable
Using gentle shading to give the petals a light, airy quality
Arranging three flowers so the whole composition feels balanced and flowing
MATERIALS USED:
HB and 2B graphite pencils
A blending stump
White sketchbook paper
Eraser

A bit about the flower itself:
The Comet Orchid is the official national flower of Seychelles, and it's special not just because of how it looks—it's endemic, which means it grows naturally nowhere else in the world. That alone makes it a powerful symbol of the islands' unique wildlife. The shape of the flower echoes the white-tailed tropicbird, another beloved national symbol, so there's a quiet harmony between land and sky in its form. For many Seychellois, it represents grace, purity, and the importance of protecting the island's natural heritage.
