'Football' vs 'Soccer' – WHY the war of words?

Those in the “football” camp are likely European, and resent those in the US or elsewhere that simply cannot get the name of their beautiful sport correct. And those that call it "soccer" hate it when people say "football", which to them is a completely different ball game. Finally, there’s a third group: people like us here at Kick off!, who want to get to the bottom of this war of words. Why all the hate over a simple name?
