Walking Yangon's Pansodan Street & Weekend Market

Описание: Built by the British and once called Phayre Street, Pansodan Street runs south from the railway station to the river, where traders arrive by morning ferry. George Orwell and Pablo Neruda have both browsed the bookstalls run by the vendors along the street.

The street was Yangon's prime business address a century ago. Several buildings along it, such as the Myanmar Agricultural Development Bank (formerly Grindlays Bank) and the Inland Waterways Department (once the the headquarters of the Irrawaddy Flotilla Company), have weathered the passage of time well, while others, such as Sofaer's Building, are in desperate need of restoration. This crumbing Italianate-style building, constructed by the Jewish-Baghdadi trader Isaac A Sofaer, still has original features such as floor tiles imported from Manchester.
