Written during a summer of newfound freedom following the departure from a 9-5 job, the album captures a sense of "unstructured time"—a throwback to the hazy, endless teenage summers where six weeks felt like a lifetime. ‘Buttercup’ anchors this bittersweet nostalgia, channeling the runaway headrush of falling in love for the first time amidst a midsummer heatwave.
While the track is built on a foundation of sherbet-sweet harmonies and fuzzy, J Mascis-inspired guitar work, a melancholic undertone lingers beneath the surface.

“This song is about a deep-seated longing for a past that can’t ever be relived,” Rachel explains. “I had this memory of lazing around on a buttercup-strewn riverbank with school friends. There was nothing to do, yet it felt like everything was about to happen. The details are becoming lost to time, but the intensity of that feeling remains—hence the closing lines: ‘this won’t last forever’.”

Recorded in Manchester, the track was engineered and produced by Joel Harries featuring drums by Felix Harrap. It was mastered by Stephen Kerrison at Weird Jungle.
