After a long day of travel, I finally arrived late in the enchanting city of Fes, Morocco. Our hotel turned out to be a grand, old Moroccan home that looked more like a palace than a place to stay. Nestled on the fourth floor, our room was incredibly luxurious and fit for royalty — all for just 1500 Rs per night, complete with air conditioning! After a restful night, I was ready to explore the city.
The next morning, however, I discovered it was Eid, and this year Morocco observed the festival quietly as per the king’s announcement. With no restaurants or shops open for breakfast, I had to make do with cake and tea. My first stop was the historic Al Qarawiyyin University, founded in 859 AD by Fatima al-Fihri, a remarkable Muslim woman and philanthropist. Using her inheritance, she established a mosque that grew into one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world. Al Qarawiyyin has been a beacon of learning and spiritual guidance for centuries, influencing Islamic scholarship and culture across the globe.
Next, I visited the famous Chouara Tannery, where the pungent smell hits you immediately. To survive this, I stuffed mint leaves into my nose, the Moroccan way of creating a natural gas mask. The tannery uses traditional methods with natural ingredients such as pigeon droppings, cow urine, quicklime, salt, and water to soften and dye the leather. This ancient craft has been practiced here for over a thousand years, making it a living museum of Moroccan artisanal heritage.
After braving the tannery, I set off towards the city of Meknes, about 65 kilometers from Fes, in search of the mysterious Qara Prison. Known for its dark history and rumored hauntings, Qara Prison was unfortunately closed for renovations during my visit. Undeterred, I continued to the city of Midelt, where I found an apartment to rest. With no restaurants open due to the festival, I ended the day by cooking noodles for dinner, reflecting on the rich history and unique experiences of my Moroccan journey.
