At the Wampanoag Homesite in the Plimoth Patuxet Museums, we listen as a cultural interpreter shares how the Wampanoag people built their canoes called mishoons by carefully burning and hollowing out large tree trunks.
This centuries-old technique uses fire to soften and shape the wood, followed by scraping with stone tools to create a smooth, sturdy canoe.
🔥 Depending on the size and wood type, building a mishoon can take from several days to a few weeks of patient, skilled work.
