Verses 6–8 – Christ Died for the Ungodly
“At just the right time, while we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.” Human love may reach for the worthy, but God “proves His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” The cross is God’s open demonstration that His heart moves toward rebels, not away from them.
Verses 9–11 – Saved from Wrath, Reconciled
“Since we have now been justified by His blood, how much more shall we be saved from wrath through Him!” The greater work (being declared right) guarantees the lesser (final rescue). Once enemies, we are now “reconciled to God through the death of His Son,” so we “boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Verses 12–14 – Adam and the Reign of Death
“Sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned.” From Adam to Moses, death still ruled even without the written Law, proving the pervasiveness of sin’s infection.
Verses 15–17 – The Overflowing Gift
The “trespass” of the one brought many deaths, but “the gift is not like the trespass.” Grace “overflowed to the many.” If death reigned through Adam, “how much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ!”
Verses 18–19 – One Act, Two Outcomes
“One trespass resulted in condemnation for all men, so also one act of righteousness resulted in justification and life for all men.” Adam’s disobedience made many sinners; Christ’s obedience makes many righteous.
Verses 20–21 – Law, Sin, and Super-Abounding Grace
“The Law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
