OS JARARACAS - EP

Because it really has, it didn’t hit me until yesterday afternoon once I was sitting on my computer responding to emails… for over an hour. I mean, don’t get me wrong, that’s not to disparage everything Jimmy stands for, because this would make for the only “job” I’ve ever had that doesn’t want to make me hang myself, that’s just an hour longer than I would’ve ever expected to spend responding a bunch of emails--in my entire life, even. I feel bad if I let any emails sit in my inbox for over 24 hours, so I try to get to them as soon as possible; it just so happened that I had more than a few emails to get to this time around. Two videos back, I asked for people to send me their bands. I intended to direct my request to people overseas, but in hindsight, I didn’t make that clear at all, so I had a lot of people sending me their stuff from inside and out of the U.S. That’s cool and all, because I ended up adding a good amount of music to my library—some of which may even be used in this month’s mix (by the way, if you said you wanted to do art for this month, I’m gonna be needing that within the next few days. Chop-chop)—but of the thirty-something bands that were shared with me, Os Jararacas easily stands to be my favorite of the bunch.

Os Jararacas is yet another band hailing from Brazil. I first heard of these guys the other day while I was researching Cãos, since Gustavo mentioned that their “ADHD 18 year-old” guitarist also did vocals in some group called Os Jararacas (which I later learned to be the name of a type of snake in Brazil). I looked into it a whim, and to my surprise, I was completely hooked within the first few seconds of listening to their 2014 EP. I mean, when someone sets up the fact that a group’s lead is a hyperactive teenager, you can’t blame me for aiming my sights a little lower than usual the first time around. But now I’m the one sitting here with an egg on my face, because Os Jararacas is absolutely phenomenal. It’s raw, rudimentary rock ‘n’ roll, baby; you can’t go wrong with that.

Being the self-serving, exploitative asshole that I am, I was interested in sharing the group on my channel, since, y’know, I do nothing but exploit bands to yuppie tumblr kids and ruin the scene for all the REAL punks (sarcasm). But I had other things I needed to post, so rather than posting and fawning over it immediately, I threw it on the backburner until I managed to clear my plate a bit. At least, that was my plan up until last night, where the ex-vocalist of Os Jararacas/guitarist of Cãos contacted me to ask if I can share his band—I’m sure you can guess which one he was referring to. So, if any of you requested an upload from me, sorry! You’ve been pushed back for Os Jararacas, hopefully you can understand why. It’s better this way, trust me.

I asked Ariel, who I guess went under the stage name “Zé Goiaba”, about any information that he can provide on his old band. However, seeing that English isn’t his first language, some details were lost in translation. But from what I’m able to make out, it seems that Os Jararacas was formed in his city of Blumenau sometime in 2013-2014, back when he was still in high school. Ariel describes the city of Blumenau as being more of a “hick” town than Curitiba, which is where Cãos is based in, so much so that people from the region were only just hearing about bands like Black Flag at the time of formation. Ariel had already played in other bands by that point, so seeing that the members didn’t have much else to do, Os Jararacas was formed. The group’s guitarist was really hyped on garage rock bands from the 60s and 70s, so that’s the type of music the band ended up playing; and damn, do they play it well. According to Ariel, his lyrics spoke of “evil pass the bar, tantrum himself, breathlessness, whatever.” Uh, like I said, some things were lost in translation, but I think I’ve made heads and tails out of the majority of what he had to say about the group. If I mis-translated something, then my bad!
