Описание: Welcome to Poetry Changes Lives, my daily reflection combining poetry, history, and a thought for the day.

On this day in 1809, the American writer and poet Edgar Allan Poe was born. Though now celebrated as a master of poetry and a founder of modern crime and detective fiction, Poe lived most of his life in poverty and uncertainty.

He struggled financially, worked for newspapers and magazines, and found it hard to earn a steady living from writing. Drink shadowed much of his life, and his personal circumstances were often tragic. His marriage to his young cousin ended with her death from tuberculosis, and Poe himself died in Baltimore at the age of 40, under mysterious circumstances.

Despite this, Poe’s influence has been immense. His imaginative power and fascination with mystery inspired later writers such as Arthur Conan Doyle, Jules Verne, and Agatha Christie.

Today’s poem, “Eldorado,” was written in response to the California Gold Rush. It reflects the human tendency to pursue distant dreams—often at great cost—and to discover too late that some goals remain forever out of reach.
