Oregon law mandating minimum nurse-to-patient ratios in all hospitals to take effect

Описание: This year Oregon became the first state to pass a law mandating minimum nurse-to-patient ratios in all hospitals.

Though California's health authority set its own regulations, which included staffing minimums, Oregon was the first to make the move through legislative action. New York and Massachusetts have requirements set for some hospital wings only.

House Bill 2697 was the result of negotiations between hospital associations, staff and nurse unions.

Nurses say the new standards will prompt better patient care.

"Poor staffing is like playing a man short in soccer -- World Cup is going on right now, and it's like playing a man down. We want a full field when we are in our health care settings," said Allison Seymour a registered nurse and secretary of the 16,000-member Oregon Nurses Association.

Seymour said poor staffing standards caused her to leave her post after the pandemic due to burnout.
