Retired U.S. Air Force Major General William Neil McCasland has been reported missing in Albuquerque, New Mexico, prompting a multi-agency search involving local authorities, the FBI, and search-and-rescue teams.
McCasland, 68 years old, was last seen around 11:00 a.m. on February 27, 2026, in the area of Quail Run Court NE near the foothills of the Sandia Mountains in northeast Albuquerque. Authorities say they do not know what he was wearing or which direction he may have traveled after leaving the area.
Because of undisclosed medical issues, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office issued a Silver Alert, stating they are concerned for his safety. Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, have joined the search effort as investigators continue to gather information and ask the public for help.
William Neil McCasland had a distinguished 34-year career in the United States Air Force, retiring in 2013 with the rank of Major General. During his career he served as Commander of the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, where he oversaw the Air Force’s global science and technology programs and managed thousands of scientists and engineers working on advanced aerospace and defense technologies.
The Air Force Research Laboratory is responsible for developing many of the technologies used by the U.S. military, including work in space systems, propulsion, directed energy, sensors, and human performance science.
McCasland also held senior leadership positions at the Pentagon, including Director of Space Acquisition for the U.S. Air Force and Director of Special Programs in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
After retiring from the Air Force, he continued working in advanced technology and defense research. McCasland served as Director of Technology at Applied Technology Associates, a company focused on aerospace and national security engineering, and later became involved with scientific organizations including Riverside Research, where he served on the board of trustees.
As of now, the search for Maj. Gen. McCasland remains ongoing. Authorities are asking anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office.
