Kobe‘s career high entering the night was 40 which he set in March of 2000. This performance against the Spurs was only his 2nd 40+ as an NBA player, but it was the first of 6 he’d eventually total during the 2000-01 season. Kobe was apparently battling a respiratory illness en route to 43 points. Chick Hearn emphasizes this just prior to the court-side postgame interview. He scored 27 of his 43 in the 2nd half, playing all 24 possible minutes.
This matchup between Los Angeles and San Antonio turned out to be pivotal long term. After splitting the season series 2-2, the teams would face off in the Conference Finals. The Lakers ended up annihilating the Spurs by way of a 4-game sweep in which they outscored them by 89 points in the series. This included game 3 by 39, and the game 4 series-clincher by 29.
