Jake Auerbach begins by recalling meeting Francis Bacon and Valerie Beston at the Marlborough Gallery. Jake also saw Bacon, Bruce Bernard, and Daniel Farson around Soho. A film project on Bacon's show in Moscow was proposed by James Birch, which led to Jake meeting with Bacon and Beston multiple times but, alas, the project was not to happen.
With this film we also remember Jake's father, Frank Auerbach (29 April 1931 – 11 November 2024), one of the leading London artists alongside Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud.
Jake Auerbach is a British film maker specialising in documentary subjects. Though his films have ranged across the cultural spectrum he is best known for his portraits of artists both contemporary and historical. His films include portraits of Lucian Freud, Walter Sickert, Celia Paul, Allen Jones, Rodin, R. B. Kitaj, Paula Rego and his father Frank Auerbach and have been broadcast and shown in museums around the world.
In our 'Francis Bacon: First Impressions' series of interviews, each interviewee was asked ‘What were your first impressions upon meeting Francis?’ First Impressions is directed by Harriet Vyner and produced by the Estate of Francis Bacon in partnership with HENI Talks.
