The Giant's Causeway is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns which were produced as a result of an ancient volcanic fissure eruption. The Giant's Causeway is located in County Antrim, on the north coast of Northern Ireland and it is now one of the top attractions in Northern Ireland.

The Giant's Causeway has been given several awarded names throughout the history, such as being declared a World Heritage Site in 1986 by UNESCO, and a national nature reserve in 1987 by the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland.

Those stepping stones forming the columns of the Giant's Causeway that lead from the cliff foot, disappear under the sea. Most of these columns are hexagonal although there are also some with four, five, seven or even eight sides. The tallest of these columns is about 12 meters high and the solidified lava in the cliffs is 28 meters thick in places.

The Giant's Causeway and the Causeway Coast are considered from the most famous touristic attractions in Northern Ireland. This place is free of charge for those willing to visit, you will only get charged if you go through the visitor's centre, which you don't actually have to do.

The interesting part about the Giant's Causeway is the story of the giant. According to the legend, the Giant's Causeway is the result of a causeway that was built by a giant. The story of this giant, who was called Fionn mac Cumhaill from the Fenian Cycle of the Gaelic mythology, was challenged to a fight by the Scottish giant Benandonner. Fionn accepted the challenge and built the causeway so that the two giants could meet. There are two different versions for the story, the first says that Fionn actually defeated Benandonner, while in another version, he hides from Benandonner when he realized that his foe is bigger than his. Fionn's wife, Oonagh, disguises Fionn as a baby and tucks him in a cradle. When Benandonner sees the size of the 'baby', he reckons that its father Fionn, must be a giant and thus he flees back to Scotland in fright, destroying the causeway behind him so that Fionn would be unable to chase him down (   • What is the Giant's Causeway? County Antri...  ).
