Why is VAC so Bad?

It isn't uncommon to see people commenting that valve anti cheat cs2 is about Valve Allowing Cheating, and back in the day, people woo would google "vac" (valve anti cheat) from the territory of Russia would even be met with text from Russian Wikipedia saying that VAC is the worst invention Valve has ever came up with.

How did it come to this? How come games that are so widely known and played by so many people aren't adequately protected from cs2 cheats and cs2 cheaters that have plagued online games for decades?

I'll begin by saying that usually, anti-cheat software has two direct purposes. The first purpose of valve anti cheat and anti cheat software in general is to protect the game by detecting and preventing reverse-engineering attempts to develop cheats, and the second purpose of anti cheat software like valve anti cheat is to detect cheats that may be in use by a player.

Such measures are known as passive measures and active measures.

Passive protection measures are achieved by implementing complex code and systems to make the development of decompilers and related software difficult as one of the prerequisites when developing cheat software would be the knowledge of the intricacies within the code and how to exploit them.

The stronger passive measures are, the less likely the valve anti cheat code would be reverse engineered and cs2 cheats would be developed because software and tools that can bypass those measures get ungodly expensive.

If those passive measures are bypassed and cs2 cheats are developed, active measures come into play.

Active measures consist of different code blocks within the game that read the memory of your computer and the applications that run within the RAM continuously in search of a cs2 cheat signature, which is a set of instructions given to your computer by the cs2 cheat.

Since the instructions given by the cs2 cheat are often represented in hexadecimal numbers like 11 F7 58, active measures search for those hexadecimal numbers and since these numbers are the signature of a cs2 cheat, if the signature exists in an anti-cheat database, cs2 cheaters will get flagged for using cs2 cheats and banned within a timeframe.

The problems with active measures start from the fact that they are very slow to implement because developers must analyze cs2 cheats manually and save the signatures of these cs2 cheats. Only then can those signatures be added to a database and the players using these cs2 cheats can get banned.

Another problem related to this is that Valve cannot ban people using cs2 cheats instantly because otherwise, cheaters in cs2 will know that the cheat is detected by valve anti cheat vac cs2 software and inform other users as well as start searching for ways to change the cheat signature.

This cat and mouse game is, unfortunately, often won by the cheat developers instead of Valve because cheat signatures are easily changed, and detecting them is tedious. Cheaters have a free roam in CS:GO and CS2 because passive protection is ineffective, and active protection measures are easy to bypass as well.

Valve knows this and that's why it has started to take a different approach with VACnet and other appliances - these appliances are based on AI which analyzes large amounts of data, including player actions and demo recordings, to effectively identify suspicious activity and halt cheaters in the process. However, it's not fully effective at present as it's in the development stage.
