People held signs on the sidewalk and warned cars of a checkpoint ahead operated by the Metropolitan Police Department and federal agencies, including officers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Homeland Security Investigations, on Georgia Avenue in the northern part of Washington Saturday morning.
"What a way to make a living, guys," yelled a man from the sidewalk as officers stopped vehicles and talked to the drivers.
In DuPont Circle, a man yelled at two armed National Guard members as they chatted with another person.
Federal agents have used aggressive policing tactics in cities such as Washington and Los Angeles at President Donald Trump's direction.
And he's threatened to expand to other cities such law enforcement duties that are traditionally reserved for local police.
Urban leaders, police officials and civil rights advocates say federal agents aren't the best equipped for this type of policing.
They're also concerned the strategy will erode the delicate relationship that local police have with the communities they serve. And there are concerns about masked agents and limited transparency in federal arrests.
