Part one: Where do pets fit in with our busy lives?

Responsible pet ownership is one of the top concerns voiced by British vets, as modern lifestyles and consumer demands conflict with our ability to meet the five welfare needs of our nation’s pets. This discussion explored how the increase in pets in urban homes is compromising pet welfare and what can be done to address this.

Questions for pet owners to consider whilst watching:

1. How much do we consider the five welfare needs of our pets when we think about getting one?
2. Are we aware of what is normal behaviour for our pets?
3. Do we know what our pets want as opposed to what we are prepared to give them?

Questions for veterinary professionals to consider whilst watching:

1. Is pet ownership a right or a privilege? If it is a privilege how could we help owners to understand what this means for them and their pet?
2. What more can the veterinary profession do to highlight pet welfare issues?
3. What could you as an individual do to highlight the issue?
