When I picked up my first French book, I had no idea what I was doing.

I was in Côte d'Ivoire on holiday. Walked into a bookshop. Saw a Danielle Steel novel—La Maison des Jours Heureux. I thought, why not?

It was hard. So hard. I didn't understand half the words. But I finished it. Cover to cover.

And that one book changed my vocabulary in ways that apps and lessons never did.
