In today’s tutorial, we’re going to walk you through a sneaky variation of Kata-guruma that works great when uke is being aggressive with grips or leaning forward. 🧠🥇
This setup gives you full control and puts you in the perfect position to drop under for a clean finish.
Here’s how to do it step by step:
Step 1.
Start with a cross grip on uke’s sleeve. Pull back the arm they’re controlling and break their grip, but keep control of their sleeve afterward.
This creates the opening you need for the next step.
Step 2.
Uke will likely respond by grabbing your exposed collar or back. As soon as they do, use your free hand to cross grip their shoulder.
If uke is bent forward, you can also grip over the back or neck to gain upper body control and limit their movement.
Step 3.
Now it’s time for kuzushi. Pull uke forward while dropping to your knees directly underneath them.
This loads their weight right onto your back—setting you up for a perfect kata-guruma lift and throw.
Step 4.
Celebrate your ippon! 🎉🥇
