Fatima Amjed explores how everyone’s crown is a reflection of their story. Her crown, adorned with jewels of love and women’s empowerment, also bears cracks. She shares her journey from ignoring those cracks to embracing them—adorning, not concealing, making her crown lighter. Through this process, she met inspiring women, including her mentor, who shaped her growth. She speaks of overcoming career hurdles and the incredible women who helped her conquer her fears. Her talk envisions a world where people can put their crowns down without fear of judgment, followed by a performance from her student, embodying this transformation. Fatima Amjed is a Performing Artist dedicated to revitalizing classical dance, a form of dance
that appears to be taking a back foot in the dance culture of Pakistan.
Fatima's fusion dance performances, where she views the classical world through a lens of
contemporary performing styles, epitomize her approach to solving this problem.
Under her directorship, Baeyyet, a local dance studio, artfully harmonizes the fields of classical
dance and theatre in an environment where young talents can engage in innovative artistic
expression. Her choreography classes seek to continue the historical and cultural traditions
without alienating the modern audience.
Beyond her work with Baeyyet, Fatima performs in the historic Walled City of Lahore, where her
vibrant performance on the backdrop of the bricked buildings and narrow lanes symbolizes the
themes ever present in her work . This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
