You can now enjoy our science videos to focus, relax, and sleep wherever you are. Follow the show so you never miss a new episode. Lower the lights, settle in, and let the universe do the turning. Tonight's sleep documentary follows a single question across every scale of reality. What if the universe was born spinning?
It begins with a photograph that should not exist. In 2025, images from the James Webb Space Telescope's JADES deep field revealed that 158 of 263 ancient galaxies rotate in the same direction, an asymmetry so strong you can see it with the naked eye. In a random universe, the split should be even. We explore the two explanations on the table. Either our distance measurements across the cosmos are biased by the Milky Way's own rotation, or the universe itself came into existence already turning.
From there, the night descends into black hole cosmology, the idea that our entire universe may sit behind the event horizon of a black hole in a parent universe, inheriting its spin the way a child inherits motion. We open the cosmic balance sheet and find that all the angular momentum in the observable universe cancels to zero, then meet the 2025 model from Hungarian and Hawaiian researchers suggesting the cosmos rotates once every 500 billion years, quietly resolving the Hubble tension without breaking a single law of physics.
The story continues through the fastest things in existence. M87* spinning at no less than 80 percent of its theoretical maximum, Sagittarius A* revealed by neural networks to be turning near top speed with its axis aimed at Earth, the ergosphere where spacetime is dragged faster than light, and the Penrose process, the proven physics of mining a black hole for power. We visit neutron stars spinning 716 times per second, the 18 minute pulsar that should be impossible, and then go inward, to the Stern Gerlach experiment, the Pauli exclusion principle holding your hand out of the table, the proton spin crisis that has gone unsolved since 1987, Godel's rotating universe that terrified Einstein, and Emmy Noether's theorem, the law beneath all conservation laws.
It ends where every night should, with the quiet realization that the planet is carrying you eastward in silence, a line item in the oldest ledger there is.
If these long nights of science help you rest, a gentle like and subscribe truly help the channel, and we read every comment, even the half asleep ones.
