Does keeping your toothbrush in the bathroom mean you're brushing with fecal bacteria? MythBusters ran a month-long experiment to find out.
Initial test: Blue dye in toilet tank, white paper covering toilet. After flushing, countless blue droplets covered the paper - proof that particles spread into the air.
The real experiment: 20 sterilized toothbrushes placed at various distances from toilet for one month with normal toilet use. Control group kept in office bathroom far away. Team disinfected before each use to avoid contamination.
Results after 30 days: Bathroom toothbrushes had E. coli contamination. The closer to the toilet, the higher the bacteria count. Office toothbrushes had almost zero E. coli.
Conclusion: When you flush, fecal bacteria become airborne and settle on surfaces including toothbrushes. Distance from toilet matters, but bathroom storage inherently increases bacterial exposure.
Will you still keep your toothbrush in the bathroom?
