Stockholm has a rich history – the city was founded in 1252 by Sweden's then ruler Birger Jarl. The city's location by the sea made it important as a centre of trade and it soon became the country's largest city. Stockholm's medieval heritage is particularly preserved in the buildings and alleys of the Old Town.
Sweden’s capital city, Stockholm, is surrounded by water and is one of the cleanest capital cities in the world.
Stockholm, with a population of 1.6 million, is located in south-eastern Sweden where Lake Mälaren flows into the Baltic Sea. The city is made up of 14 islands, linked by a total of 57 bridges, earning Stockholm the nickname, the ‘Venice of the North’.
Stockholm’s city centre is located in the district of Norrmalm. It is home to the Government and the Riksdag, as well as the Royal Palace, the Royal Swedish Opera (which celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2023) and the Royal Dramatic Theatre. To the east is Östermalm, with its fashionable street Strandvägen and exclusive shops and restaurants. On the scenic island of Djurgården you will find the popular Vasa Museum. Södermalm can be described as more relaxed and creative, with many trendy cafés and restaurants.

Clean capital city with unique archipelago
With its proximity to water and many green spaces, Stockholm is today ranked as one of the cleanest cities in the world. The air quality has improved significantly over the past 50 years, thanks in particular to the expansion of the district heating network. The city has an ambitious climate policy and ranks high in sustainability ratings.
Stockholm’s metro system has been described as the world’s longest art exhibition – 110 kilometres long. The metro system is currently being expanded with several new stations – work that is expected to continue until the mid-2030s.
Stockholm is surrounded by an archipelago of approximately 30,000 islands, which are home to 10,000 residents and are a tourist destination for over four million visitors a year.
Home of innovation – then and now
Located in the Old Town is the Nobel Museum, which keeps Alfred Nobel’s memory alive. The world-famous Nobel banquet is held at Stockholm City Hall every year, and the city continues to be a leader in innovation. After Silicon Valley, Stockholm is home to the world’s second largest number of ‘unicorns’, companies valued at a billion dollars.
Stockholm University, the KTH Royal Institute of Technology and the Stockholm School of Economics are some of the city’s higher education institutions which attract many students, not least from other countries. The number of foreign students enrolled at Stockholm universities has increased in recent years.
In 2023, two royal anniversaries will be celebrated: Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf celebrates 50 years on the throne and it is 500 years since Gustav Vasa, who liberated Stockholm from the Danish siege, was crowned king.
