On November 4, 1979, a crowd of radical Iranian students stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. They were angry at Washington for allowing the ousted Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, to enter the United States for medical treatment. The students took 66 Americans hostage and demanded the Shah be returned for trial. The crisis dragged on for 444 days, dominating U.S. news and crippling relations between the two countries. All hostages were finally released on January 20, 1981, just minutes after Ronald Reagan was sworn in as president.#iranhostagecrisis
