Israel announced what it called a "preemptive strike" against Iran on Saturday, amid continued mediated talks between Washington and Tehran that were meant to avert a military conflict.
"The State of Israel has launched a preemptive strike against Iran. Defence Minister Israel Katz has declared a special and immediate state of emergency throughout the country," read a statement from his ministry.
Shortly after, a US official confirmed that American forces had joined in the attacks.
Explosions have been reported in the Iranian cities of Isfahan, Qom, Karaj and Kermanshah.
