The poem/song is of anonymous origin, and is likely written in the mid-to-late 1860s, shortly after Gardiner's capture and trial. It is also known as "Frank Gardiner He Is Caught at Last".
The poem chronicles Gardiner's capture, his trial, and his crimes, including the wounding of Sergeant Middleton and the Eugowra gold escort robbery, Australia's biggest gold heist..
It reflects the popular sentiment of the era, which saw some bushrangers as "friends" of the poor, but ultimately focuses on his downfall.
By the suggestion in the last verse, it would indicate that Mrs Kitty Brown (Ben Hall's sister-in-law), betrayed Frank Gardiner directly, or indirectly through association.
Frank was pardoned by the Governor in 1872 and released in 1874, on the condition he would be exiled from NSW. In 1868, Kitty Brown shot herself in New Zealand, and died aged 25.
Frank Gardiner went on to run a pub in San Francisco, and died in 1882.
