I shot this video at his concert at The Shade Tree on March 6, 1993 when I was compiling material to transcribe the “Windham Hill Guitar Sampler” (1994).

A little background: Ed Gerhard is playing an Ervin Somogyi dreadnought guitar in this video. My Ervin Somogyi guitar I had built in the late 1980s was the nexus for me meeting pro audio engineer Henry Austin, a client of Ervin’s and also a friend of Ed Gerhard, placing me on the path to becoming a professional transcriber producing guitar transcriptions for publication.

Upon Henry’s arrival to my house (referred by Ervin), I attempted to persuade Henry out of ordering a guitar from Ervin because my guitar was so lifeless and already falling a part due to improperly dried Brazilian rosewood. So much for being the “Responsive Guitar”, Ervin! Despite my attempt to discourage him, Henry went on to order his guitar, which actually turned out very nice. What are the odds? Was I the one out of one thousand guitar builds of Ervin’s destined for failure? Or, was he just an unscrupulous businessman seizing the opportunity to move some inferior materials in the form of a custom built guitar on a low profile customer? Either way, I got burned! Rant over!

Henry and I quickly became good friends over our mutual interest in fingerstyle guitar and he shared with me a transcription of this song in pencil, TAB only, by someone he regretfully hired, which was simply too vague and wrong! I replied, “I can do it!” and went on to produce this arrangement Ed published in his first book “Ed Gerhard, Guitar Music: Selections from Night Birds & Luna” which, by the way, is currently up for sale on eBay (https://www.ebay.com/itm/324443735546). Ed’s arrangement of “Si Bhig, Si Mhor” is, by far, my favorite!
