Pete Aardema and Kevin Braun’s homemade V12 engine is a remarkable feat of engineering, showcasing the ingenuity and determination of its creators. Built from the ground up, this naturally aspirated powerful engine produces an impressive 950 horsepower on gasoline and is capable of revving up to a staggering 10,000 RPM. Such high performance is rarely seen in a homemade engine, making it a true testament to the craftsmanship and expertise of Aardema and Braun.
However, the pursuit of speed at Bonneville is never without its risks. During a high-speed run, the engine faced catastrophic failure at 280 MPH. Several factors contributed to the breakdown, including high RPMs that pushed the engine to its limits and a lean condition that compromised its internal stability. Unfortunately, this led to a loss of compression in cylinder number 10, causing the engine to fail and bringing their record-breaking attempt to a premature end. Despite the setback, the V12 remains an incredible achievement in the world of high-performance automotive engineering.
