August eighth, 1944. Twelfth Army Group headquarters in Laval, France. The morning sun filters gently through the canvas of a command tent where General Omar Bradley sits at a folding desk carefully reviewing supply reports. A cup of coffee steams next to a detailed operational map of Normandy spread before him. The breakout from Saint-Lô is proceeding exactly as planned. Everything is precisely on schedule. Everything is under control. Then Major Chester Hansen, Bradley's operations officer, bursts through the tent flap without ceremony. He's holding a radio message in his hand and his face is pale. "Sir," Hansen says, clearly out of breath. "Third Army reports capture of Le Mans. General Patton's forces are already sixty miles beyond their designated phase line."
