Ipswich’s creative community has launched into 2026 with renewed energy, new projects and major events on the horizon, following the return of the “Get Your Arts and Gear” podcast and fresh announcements from local arts leaders.
Broadcast from the temporarily closed Arts Connect Community Gallery at Booval Fair Shopping Centre, hosts Glen Smith and Sparky welcomed back marketing manager Rachel to discuss a busy start to the year for the city’s arts and community sector.
The shopping centre recently received a special commendation at the Get Your Arts and Gear Awards in December, recognising its strong community engagement, including murals, creative programs and partnerships with local initiatives such as Galvanise and Spark.
Rachel said the centre continues to host regular community activities, including “Messy Kids” art sessions for children aged under five and fortnightly social catch-ups with Y2 Tribe aimed at reducing isolation.
A major community mural competition is also in development, with full details expected to be released in March. The project will feature prizes and encourage local artists and residents to get involved.
Looking ahead, the centre will introduce a new Easter program, replacing the traditional Easter Bunny with “Buddy the Kangaroo” and free children’s craft activities during the school holidays.
Meanwhile, Ipswich’s wider arts scene is already thriving in early 2026. Recent highlights include exhibitions at the new creative hub in the former CWA building, art fight competitions, and growing theatre interest at Ipswich Little Theatre, where extra performances of The Shawshank Redemption have been added due to demand. Productions of Kinky Boots are also scheduled for March.
Creative professionals and emerging artists are also preparing for the upcoming Creative Summit in March, organised by Ipswich City Council, featuring guest speaker Ben Lee.
Podcast host Glen Smith will be among the presenters, offering guidance for aspiring artists on building sustainable creative careers.
Organisers say the strong start to the year reflects Ipswich’s growing reputation as a regional arts hub.
“With mural projects, exhibitions, theatre, summits and community programs all underway, there’s never been a better time to get involved in the local arts scene,” Smith said.
The Arts Connect Community Gallery at Booval Fair Shopping Centre is expected to reopen following renovations in early March, with further announcements planned across social media and online platforms.
Residents are encouraged to follow local arts organisations and community centres to stay informed about upcoming events and opportunities throughout 2026.
