Why visiting Manali is unsafe in Monsoon

The monsoon was really bad in Himachal Pradesh last year in 2023. There were floods, cloudbursts, and flash floods everywhere. Many roads including stretches of the Chandigarh-Manali highway were washed away. Thousands of tourists remained trapped for days in the Kullu and Parvati valleys.
Today, I’ll tell you why Manali can be unsafe in monsoon and why you should avoid visiting it in July and August.

Unsafe roads
The first reason is the unsafe roads. There are frequent landslides and traffic jams on the highway that connects Chandigarh with Manali. The highway, especially between Mandi and Manali, falls in the landslide-prone zone despite the fact that a number of tunnels have been opened on this road stretch. Also, floods can cause a lot of damage to the highway and roads as we have seen in 2023.

Rivers and rivulets
The second reason is that all the rivers and rivulets in and around Manali are in spate during monsoon, making it dangerous to be near them. The Beas river is at her ferocious self. In the event of a flood or flash flood, it’s not safe to even travel on the highway or internal roads.

Heavy rains
Even if you manage to reach Manali overcoming all hurdles, chances are you will remain tied down to your room due to rains outside. Until and unless of course, you like watching the rain from your hotel room window the whole day.

No adventure activities
If you are into adventure, then again Manali is not the place for you during monsoon. Most of the adventure activities like rafting and paragliding are temporarily banned by the local administration for two months. The ban on adventure activities comes into effect on July 15 and it lasts till September 15.

Risky to visit nearby places of interest also
Last but not the least, it’s also riskier to move out of Manali during the rainy season. If you are in Manali and say want to visit Atal Tunnel or Sissu or may be Naggar or Kasol, then poor road conditions may hamper your movement. Landslides also occur quite frequently on these roads also.
