Apple Daily founder Jimmy Lai was sentenced to 20 years under Hong Kong’s new national security laws, which critics said amounted to life imprisonment. On Tuesday, Hongkongers in Taiwan and Taiwanese activists gathered outside the Legislative Yuan in protest. They said Lai’s case should alarm Taiwan, as it’s Beijing’s way of silencing and warning its critics. Minister of the Mainland Affairs Council, Chiu Chui-cheng also condemned the decision, and said it’s proof that China’s “one country, two systems” arrangement for its special administrative regions are now in name only, and that Hong Kong judiciary has become a tool for political persecution.
Civic groups and academics have banded outside the Legislative Yuan, to protest against the 20-year sentence for Apple Daily founder Jimmy Lai, on charges of Hong Kong’s new national security law.

This isn’t a singular case. It’s a political demonstration by the CCP. It’s a political performance to explicate the consequences one could face if one were to refuse making concessions to China.

It’s not solely a Hong Kong affair. It’s the very frontline of global democracies against totalitarianism. Hong Kongers are currently experiencing the chilliest and darkest winter night.
Hong Kongers in Taiwan condemn the harsh 20-year sentence for 78-year-old Lai, which critics say is tantamount to a life sentence. Taiwanese NGOs also say Lai’s case is China’s direct warning for Taiwan.

It’s a gruesome reminder for the Taiwanese of democratic backsliding. China’s 50-Year Agreement for Hong Kong was nullified already in 2019. If there are still people in Taiwan who believe China’s promises, I think they’re either too naïve or outright liars.

Hong Kong is the first precedent from which we see freedom being retracted. They used to have freedom but now they don’t.
The CCP now exercises full control over Hong’ Kong’s politics and judiciary. Jimmy Lai is the first to be punished, which the Mainland Affairs Council strongly condemns.
Chiu Chui-cheng
Mainland Affairs Council
This case proves yet again that the CCP’s so called “one country, two systems,” the freedom and rights enshrined in the Hong Kong Basic Law are in name only. Hong Kong judiciary has become a tool for political persecution.
Hong Kongers and Taiwanese are aligned in resisting the CCP’s dictatorial overreach and oppression of freedom and democracy.
