It starts with two contemporary images from the 19th century showing Greek pirates. Then the journey goes 3,000 years back to the first traces of Greek pirates who went as far as Egypt. Greek ceramics from th 5th century BC show images of pirates and in Roman times even Julius Caesar had a dangerous encounter with pirates in the Aegean waters. A image from the 10th century AD shows the cruel punishment of pirates in the Middle Ages. The most famous pirate from Greece was Barbarossa. Born on the island Lesbos he later became an admiral for the Turks in the 16th century. In the same epoch the main enemies of the Turks in the Mediterranean were the knights of the "Order of St. John" who made many incursions to Greek waters to attack Turkish ships as shown in a picture of the 17th century. Some photos of the Greek islands show that the influence of pirates exists still today in architecture of old villages and names of places. Although the main piratical epoch ended around 1827, piracy is still mentioned in the 1850's.
