In an open letter to his 17-year-old son marking International Men's Day, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer reflected on the challenges young men face today, describing growing up as “not easy” and urging men to speak openly about mental health.
He drew on his own strained relationship with his father, noting that spending time with his son is one of his week’s highlights and expressing pride in the young man he has become.
Starmer also acknowledged the sacrifices his family has made due to his role as prime minister and highlighted issues affecting men, such as suicide, alcohol abuse, and problem gambling, as part of the government’s new men’s health strategy, which includes £3.6 million for local suicide prevention and a partnership with the Premier League to promote mental health awareness.
