Last month, Bangladesh became the eighth country to introduce the Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine (TCV) — joining Pakistan, Nepal, Liberia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Burkina Faso, and Samoa.
Nearly 5 crore children in Bangladesh will receive TCV doses manufactured in India, the world’s vaccine powerhouse.
But here’s the question: if India produces the vaccine, why hasn’t it been added to our own Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP) yet?
This matters because India still records one of the world’s highest typhoid burdens, especially among children — driven by poor sanitation, limited diagnostic access, and growing antibiotic resistance.
The TCV is a single-dose vaccine, proven to protect for at least 4 years, and can be safely given with other childhood vaccines. The World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended it since 2018 — yet India’s rollout remains pending.
