Funk, Soul, Jazz and a "bit of disco" recorded at Sound of Birmingham in Birmingham, Alabama. Excerpts from the back cover:
Improvisation is the keynote in any stage band and this one is no exception.
The stage band in its present phase was started in 1974 by band director Edward Crenshaw, who incidentally has performed both as a student and professionally with ensembles of the same type.
The compositions heard in this album are original with the exception of two, "Killing Me Softly", (Gimbel - Fox arranged by Sanford), and "Fool on the Hill", (Lennon - McCartney arranged by Mahaffey).
Design of this album is geared to cover a wide spectrum of improvisational styles, from written to impromptu.
Three Composers were used in the writing of the originals; Edward Crenshaw, the director, created and scored:
"An Astrological Theme": An idea designed for usage in television or movie making.
"Our Love": A hybrid of pop, rock & swing.
Two brilliant young men in the persons of Kevin Taylor and Kelvin Kendrick were responsible for compositions that show great promise:
Kevin Taylor:
"Ebony Love Melody": A song without words designed to project title through improvisation and
recurring chorus line.
"Eagles Flight": A Bit of disco.
Kelvin Kendrick: "Never Let You Go": A late comer to repertoire but easy to listen to, soothing to the mind.
The recording industry is very much a reality in today's world, and a promising vocation for our young and gifted. By awarding our students this opportunity we've put them one step closer to readiness for tomorrow's society.
