I compiled this video for the seller to be able to see the problems I have been having with this lathe I received on 09-15-2020. The numbers seen in the video can be referenced via the below text:
1. Grinder mark on front slideway on bed. Apparent casting flaw ground over. This cannot be realistically fixed, lathe bed must be replaced.
2. Gearbox for carriage control does not work properly. Levers will not move most of the time. Internal parts in the knobs were not installed during assembly. Arrow decals were upside down. "Forward" and "Backwards" appear to be reversed. Sometimes completely disconnects from the lead screw. I tried multiple spindle speeds with much luck. Springs and ball bearings were found laying on the bottom of the crate when delivered. I peeled off the arrow decals (which were put on upside down anyway) and put springs and ball bearings into the concealed hole sealed with a set screw. Did not make any difference. Possibly the gearbox got something damaged inside with those parts being missing, or else was just defective from the start. Need gearbox replaced. Need new arrow decals.
3. Pulley wobble on spindle. Need new pulley.
4. Pulley wobble on motor shaft. Need new pulley. *Any chance this wobble weakened, stretched, or damaged the belts?
5. OFF switch seems slow to shut down motor. I watched multiple videos where the motor shut down was instantaneous. This is dangerous since in an emergency shut down, the motor will continue to run for several seconds after the emergency button was depressed. I don't know if this is by design or if there is a flaw that would require a part replacement. Maybe control board?
6. Also FORWARD/REVERSE switch will shut down the motor whenever that switch is changed position. Any time the switch is moved to or past the "0" IDLE position the motor will shut down. That doesn't seem logical to me. Again, viewing multiple videos, other lathes do not act in this manner. The manual is unclear about whether this ir normal of not for this model.
7. Tailstock is not machined correctly and is not perpendicular to the bed. Doesn't appear to be any adjustment to correct this problem. Need new tailstock.
8. Upper portion of tailstock shows excessive misalignment with headstock spindle by being adjusted about a quarter inch towards the front. Possibly at least partially caused by the misalignment of the slideways to the headstock. I tried adjusting the set screws in the back of the upper part of the tailstock, but there was still a lot of play there. Needs replacement?
9. Tailstock quill is excessively positioned towards the front of the lathe bed. Probably caused by the above earlier mentioned problems.
10. Carriage has excessive play, both in rocking motion, and also pushed or pulled towards or away from centerline of spindle motion. There just seems to be way too much play with the carriage and apron. I believe that trying to get cuts with the cutting tool pressing against the work piece and this carriage having this much play would result in pretty poor results with the carriage moving under pressure. I don't see any way to adjust this, as there are no gibs for this part. Replacement?
11. Bed/ways are not properly aligned to the headstock. Granted that the square I used is not a precise machinist tool, but it is accurate enough for everything else I used it for to be confident it is showing me quite a divergence of the slideways from being square with the headstock/spindle. Possibly this can be adjusted via loosening the headstock, but I have no idea how much play I will have available.
12. Cross slide wheel has too much lash. Adjustment somewhere? Or is this just defective?
13. Cross slide gibs are adjusted all the way in, at end of travel of adjustment. Gib too thin. Need a thicker gib, such as the one in the compound slide.
14. Saddle hand wheel excessive runout. Not sure what would be needed to correct this problem. I don't see any obvious way to adjust it for lash.
15. No back grease/dust seal on chuck. It appears that this chuck originally had a smaller hole through it and was just bored out to accomodate the 38mm spindle hole. The thread holes normally used to hold a seal are obviously cut in half.
16. Chuck guard exessively loose. This is probably an easy fix once I open up the headstock, just wanted to mention it here as sort of a punch list of things needed to be done.
I have not opened up the headstock, nor disassembled anything else on this lathe. It has not yet been used to do any cutting or any other work it is designed for. I consider this to just be in the inspection stage, and it appears to have failed in a lot of departments.
List of parts definitely needed to be replaced:
1. slideways/bed
2. gearbox, complete assembly
3. gearbox control "arrow" decals (2)
4. pulley on motor shaft
5. pulley on rear of spindle
6. tailstock, complete
7. wider gib for cross slide
