Slovenia's Hidden Gem: The Serene Watercourse of Krupa in Bela Krajina

Описание: The source of the Krupa River is one of the most visited spots in the Bela Krajina. The Krupa River originates in the village of Krupa, which is four kilometers from Semič in the direction of Gradac.

Krupa comes to the surface in strong karst springs from under a 30 m high and 50 m long rock wall. Below it is a 7-meter-deep original lake that fascinates visitors with its emerald color. If you visit early in the morning, you'll be able to enjoy the mysterious mists and the soothing silence, and you might even spot a lively family of ducks in the pond. A raven, the largest of European crows, occasionally nests on the high cliff above the spring.

In terms of water content, the source of the Krupa River is the largest in the Bela Krajina. The average minimum water flow is 1000 liters per second. The water temperature is about 10 degrees Celsius all year round (plus or minus two degrees). The pleasant coolness by the spring is especially beneficial in the summer heat.

Water flows into this spring from the high Dinaric ridges of Kočevski rog, Radoha and Gorjanci, which was proven by follow-up experiments with the help of dyeing.

The source of the Krupa river and the source of the cave shell further down the river are the only known deposits of the Jalžić congeria cave shell in Slovenia. This animal is the only known cave shell in the world.

Endemic cave snails, a tiny cave piper and even a human fish were also found in the underground hinterland of Krupa. Underground creatures are mostly inaccessible to us in nature, but you can learn more about them in the Semič Museum House. There you can see the depths of the Cave Shell Spring through a diver's camera.

The area along Krupa is also rich in birds. More than forty species live here, nine of which are on the red list of endangered birds in Slovenia. The bowl turtle also lives near Krupa. In Slovenia, it is known as the only indigenous turtle of inland waters.
