Hendo first learned to fly the UH-1 Huey in RAAF 5 Squadron, before moving to 12 Squadron to fly the iconic CH-47 Chinook.

Hendo's experience with 12 Squadron lasted many years, and he witnessed much change in the Australian Air Force, including the first set of camouflaged CH-47s to be used by the RAAF in the mid 70s, and the eventual transfer of helicopters from the air force to the Australian Army in 1989.
