Sectarian Orange marches, intercommunal violence, and displacement in Ballymurphy, New Barnsley, and Springmartin areas were the grim backdrop at the beginning of April 1970. Reverend Ian Paisley was in the thick of it from the 1st April and “demanded” an interview with the Commanding Officer of the British Army regiment in the area, 1st Battalion Royal Scots. The British Army files that Paper Trail uncovered also recorded Paisley’s threat that: ‘If he was not given satisfaction, “He would bring down the Shankill boys to Ballymurphy tonight.”
Those Shankill Boys included truckloads of armed men of the proscribed Ulster Volunteer Force already in close contact with the British Army units in the area.
The scene was set for the Battle of Ballymurphy, and the British Army prepared to gas the Irish Catholic estate.
