A traditional Scottish kilt is made from wool thread woven into the fabric and pattern known as tartan.

Historically, the kilt was woven from wool because that was the most common and most practical cloth in Scotland - suited to the Scottish environment. However, you can find many examples of tartan woven in other fabrics, especially after the Tartan Craze of the Victorian era got rolling.

One reason for this is the word itself. "Tartan" technically represents just the patterning of colors and lines into a dynamic grid.

Sometime in the 15th century, the word first appears in Scots dialect and probably is rooted in the Old French 'tertaine'. It may surprise some to learn that tartan as an artform has been executed over the centuries using all kinds of cloth - from silks in ancient times to modern polyviscose.

But is a clan tartan woven out of something other than wool a "real" "official" representation of the Clan ... or of Scottish culture?

How you choose to represent your clan is ultimately up to you., Some people prefer a more formalized representation and high quality fabrics woven in Scotland. Others like to splash their tartan on all sorts of clothing and décor to show their pride dramatically - everything from tartan clan t-shirts to tartan car seats. Most of us are somewhere in the middle.
