Chiefs and royalty, known as aliʻi, often demonstrated their prowess on the waves, showcasing their strength and skill. Surfing was more than just a sport; it was a way to connect with the ocean, demonstrate social status, and even resolve conflicts without resorting to warfare.

Central to traditional Hawaiian surfing was the use of the alaia surfboard. This board was primarily used by commoners or makaʻāinana, and was generally crafted from the wood of the Koa tree. The alaia is a thin, finless board, typically ranging from 7 to 12 feet in length. Its design, although simple, required great skill to master due to the board's lack of buoyancy and fins. The alaia's flat, rounded nose and tail allowed surfers to glide smoothly on the waves, demanding precise control and balance from the rider. This design laid the foundation for modern surfboard development and continues to be revered by surf enthusiasts who appreciate its historical significance and the challenging ride it offers .

The resurgence of interest in traditional Hawaiian surfboards, including the alaia, reflects a broader appreciation for the history and origins of surfing. Modern surfboard shapers and surfers are rediscovering the joy and skill involved in riding these classic boards. By embracing the alaia, contemporary surfers are not only paying homage to Hawaiian culture but also reconnecting with a purer form of wave riding. I tried my best to honor the traditional Hawaiian trade by crafting my own version of an Alaia surfboard. Instead of using koa, I used redwood, foam, and whatever else I could find in the pile of scrap materials. Because of this, I fiber glassed the wooden board to ensure it was water tight and helped with a little extra floatation. This is just my first alaia build with many more to come.
