Sub-Saharan Africa bears the highest burden of maternal and newborn deaths, as well as stillbirths. Despite significant strides, these challenges persist largely due to systemic challenges like inadequate financing, limited access to quality health care, poor health infrastructure, shortages of skilled health care workers, and insufficient medical supplies.
Over the last six months, global financing for health has undergone unprecedented changes, with urgent questions for the future playing out at the national level. As donor countries scale back their global health investments, African nations must double down on domestic health spending, amplify maternal and child survival on political agendas, and meet the commitments they have set for themselves.
Noting the profound financing challenges countries currently face, and building on discussions at recent events such as the World Health Assembly, this two-part webinar aims to foster dialogue among policymakers, researchers, civil society organizations, and donors on rethinking the future of maternal and child survival in Africa amidst the evolving aid landscape.
