Located about 10 miles off the coast of Maine in the Atlantic Ocean, the beautiful Monhegan Island is only 1.7 miles long and .7 of a mile wide. Because its cold waters are a hospitable environment for many fish and lobsters, the island is the year-round home to a small number of rugged lobster fisherman and their families. During the summer months, when the lobster season is closed, Mohegan attracts numerous tourists and artists who come to experience and paint its picturesque harbor, tall bluffs, crashing surf, and many varieties of wildflowers.
