Marianismo and emotional neglect in Mexican/Latino households

Описание: Marianismo is deeply rooted in the forced Catholicism imposed upon our ancestors. During the Spanish genocide, our knowledge, pueblos, and schools were burned, and our leaders and teachers were killed. This left us terrified and vulnerable, making it easier for Catholicism to be forced upon us. Marianismo promotes the idea of being chaste, virginal, and submissive to one's husband, sacrificing oneself for the sake of the family and maintaining a perfect image resembling La Virgencita.
However, beneath this facade of perfection, there is often a lot of suffering in silence. We are expected to hold in our emotions, confusions, and pain, mirroring the stoic silence of La Virgencita. These cultural ideals are deeply embedded in our society, even if they are not explicitly taught. They are felt obligations for many, rooted in fear, guilt, and shame. Our mothers and grandmothers pass down these ideals not out of malice, but because this is what they have known and lived with for so long. Going against these expectations can be terrifying, as it can jeopardize our connection to our family and trigger feelings of guilt and shame.
It is important to recognize the power of fear and how it influences our behaviors and choices. Our brains are wired to prioritize safety and maintain familial connections. Challenging these deep-rooted cultural norms requires understanding and empathy. By raising awareness and breaking the generational traumas and curses caused we can begin to build a new future for our people, for our raza.
