Hello, this is Nick Hauenstein, and welcome to your Azure Daily Minute for Thursday, March 27th, 2025.

On March 31st, 2028, the Desired State Configuration Extension for Azure Virtual Machines will be retired. Before that day comes, you will want to ensure that you have transitioned to Azure Machine Configuration. Azure Machine Configuration uses DSC 2 instead of DSC 1. Configurations are deployed through the DSC extension in a "push" model, where the operation is completed asynchronously, and after deployment, no further information is returned to Resource Manager. The monitoring and drift are managed within the machine. Machine configuration processes configurations in a "pull" model. The extension is deployed to a virtual machine and then jobs are executed based on machine configuration assignment details. It isn't possible to view the status of the configuration in real time as it's being applied inside the machine however, it is possible to watch and correct drift from Azure Resource Manager after the configuration is applied.

Yesterday, the Azure Chaos Studio team announced a new feature to enable auto-tagging of experiment resources for customers using private networking in their experiments. Previously, while customers could apply tags to their experiments themselves, the underlying container and relay resources created as part of the experiment execution were not taggable, leading to potential conflicts with Azure Policy enforcement. With this update, Chaos Studio will now automatically tag the resources it creates on your behalf with the same tags applied to your experiment. This ensures policy compliance, improved resource tracking, and better integration with existing governance frameworks. This feature is available only for customers using private networking, since Chaos Studio doesn't deploy resources for experiments that don't have private networking enabled.
