PROFESSOR XINHUA LIU – A SOVEREIGN CURRENCY APPROACH TO INTERNATIONALIZATION OF THE RMB (Institute of Economics, Campinas, Unicamp, August 15th, 2018)
In this lecture, Professor Xinhua Liu, of Shaanxi Normal University in China, discusses the internationalization of the Chinese currency. Professor Liu starts with an overview of the current economic situation in China and deals with the relation between China and the United States from the perspective of sectoral balances. Using the sovereign approach to discuss China, Professor Liu states that China is now in a hedge position but gradually is going to transit to floating exchange rate, and with that one can expect that the trade surplus will decline. At the end of the lecture, Professor discusses the risks involved in this transition, which includes opening the capital account, and that one important thing is to avoid “excessive financialization of the economy”.
