In this presentation Yuanlong will be speaking on the topic: Chinese Reception of Pan-African.” He argues that the ideal of Pan-Africanism has played a crucial role in shaping the Chinese understanding, approaches, and policies toward Africa. Despite the contemporary relevance and wide influence of Chinese interpretation and reception of Pan-Africanism, it has been much overlooked and understudied. This study will provide a historiography of the study of Pan-Africanism in China through a literature review while highlighting further Chinese conceptualization of Pan-Africanism. It is evident that the study of Pan-Africanism in China originated from the interest in knowing Africa better, and it is clear that the study has been a crucial component in Chinese understanding of Africa. The study has also resulted in further theoretical developments that led to a particular imagination of Pan-Africanism. These results suggested that Chinese interpretation and reception of Pan-Africanism could potentially contribute to the greater discourse about the Pan-African ideal.
