St. John's H.S. School was a part of the diocese of Tezpur. In the year 1992 the diocese of Tezpur was divided and the Archdiocese of Guwahati was created. In the year 2000 A.D. the existing Archdiocese of Guwahati was divided and a new diocese of Bongaigaon was formed and Rt. Rev. Thomas Pullop- pillil D.D. took over the charge of the headquarter of the diocese of Bongaigaon. Now the institution is under the domain of the diocese of Bongaigaon.

St. John's, Barama was established by Rev. Fr. Kulandaisamy in the year 1985. The institution was inaugurated by Dr. Bhumidhar Barman, the then Honourable Minister of Education of Assam.
